- Your site is slow on mobile networks, not just on your office Wi-Fi
- There's no clear next step for a visitor to take
- Visitors can't find what they came for in one or two clicks
- Your site breaks or looks wrong on phones
- There's nothing on the page that builds trust
Below is a technical checklist to find out which of these is hurting you, and exactly how to fix it.
1. Your Site Is Slow on Real Mobile Networks
Most business owners test their own website on office or home Wi-Fi. That's the problem — your customers are checking you out on 4G, in a moving auto-rickshaw, or on a phone with 3GB of RAM. A site that "feels fast" to you can take 6-8 seconds to load for them.
Why this matters more than most people realize: Google's own research has shown that as page load time goes from 1 to 5 seconds, the probability of a visitor leaving (bouncing) jumps sharply. On mobile, every extra second of load time can cost you a meaningful share of visitors before they even see your homepage.
How to check it:
- Run your homepage and your main service page through Google PageSpeed Insights — check the mobile score specifically, not desktop
- Look at "Largest Contentful Paint" (LCP) — this measures how long it takes for the main content to appear. Anything above 2.5 seconds needs attention
- Test on an actual phone with mobile data turned on, not Wi-Fi
Common cause we see repeatedly: oversized, uncompressed images. A single homepage banner image saved straight from a phone camera can be 4-5 MB. Compressed properly, the same image can look identical at under 200 KB.
2. There's No Clear Next Step for Visitors
A visitor can be impressed by your website and still leave, simply because you never told them what to do next. If your homepage doesn't have an obvious button like "Get a Free Quote," "Book a Call," or "WhatsApp Us Now" visible without scrolling, you're relying on the visitor to figure out how to contact you. Most won't bother.
How to check it:
- Open your homepage on a phone. Without scrolling, is there one clear action button?
- Count your call-to-action buttons across the homepage. If it's zero, or if it's five different competing ones, both are a problem
- Check if your contact number and WhatsApp link are clickable (tap-to-call), not just plain text
Fix: One primary action per page, repeated at the top and bottom. For a service business, "Get a free quote" or "Message us on WhatsApp" almost always outperforms a generic "Contact Us."
3. Visitors Can't Find What They Came For
If someone searches "website development pricing" and lands on your site, can they find your pricing or a clear starting point within two clicks? If your services, pricing, and portfolio are buried three or four menu levels deep, most visitors give up and go to a competitor's site instead — even if your work and pricing are better.
How to check it:
- Pick your three most important pages (services, pricing/contact, portfolio). Time yourself finding each one from the homepage
- Check your navigation menu — more than 6-7 top-level items usually means visitors are overwhelmed, not helped
- Look at Google Search Console (if connected) under Performance: are people landing on your homepage for searches that should go straight to a specific service page? That's a sign your site structure isn't matching what people are searching for
4. Your Site Breaks or Looks Wrong on Phones
More than 60% of web traffic globally now comes from mobile devices. If your layout shifts, text overlaps, or buttons are too small to tap accurately on a phone, you're losing customers before they even read your content.
How to check it:
- Open your site on at least two different phone sizes (a small Android and an iPhone, if possible)
- Check for horizontal scrolling — if you have to scroll sideways to read text, that's a critical fix
- Check whether buttons and links are easy to tap without zooming in
One pattern we see often in small business sites: a desktop design gets "shrunk" for mobile instead of being properly rebuilt for it. It technically displays, but text sizes, spacing, and tap targets are all wrong for a phone screen.
5. There's Nothing on the Page That Builds Trust
Even a fast, well-designed, easy-to-navigate site loses customers if the visitor isn't sure you're a real, reliable business. This is especially true for service businesses where the customer is trusting you with money upfront.
How to check it:
- Do you show your business registration, years of operation, or any credibility marker?
- Do you have at least a few real client reviews, testimonials, or completed project examples visible?
- Is there a real phone number, email, and physical or business address, not just a contact form?
- Are your social proof links (Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) visible and active, not just present in the footer as an afterthought?
Fix: Add a simple "Why work with us" section with 3-4 trust points — registration status, number of projects completed, response time, and a couple of short client quotes. This section alone often has more impact on conversion than any design change.
Quick Self-Audit Checklist
Run through this in five minutes:
- Mobile PageSpeed score checked (not just desktop)
- LCP under 2.5 seconds
- One clear call-to-action visible without scrolling on mobile
- Contact number is tap-to-call
- Pricing or "get started" page reachable in 2 clicks
- No horizontal scrolling on phone
- Buttons/links easy to tap without zooming
- Trust signals (registration, reviews, real contact info) visible on homepage
- Social proof links are live and active
If you're checking off fewer than 7 of these 9, that's likely where you're losing customers — not your pricing, not your work quality.
The Bigger Picture
A website that's technically fast but doesn't convert, and a website that converts well but loads slowly, both lose you customers — just in different ways. Speed gets people to your site and keeps them from leaving early; clarity and trust are what turn that visit into an actual inquiry. You need both working together, not one or the other.
